World Medical Association Condemns Attack on Nasser Hospital in Gaza

The World Medical Association (WMA) strongly condemns the recent attack on Nasser Hospital in Gaza, which killed and wounded journalists, health workers and civilians.

Hospitals and health professionals must never be targeted in armed conflicts. Such attacks are grave violations of international humanitarian law and threaten the principle of medical neutrality, a cornerstone of medical ethics and human rights.

WMA supports the statement issued today by the Israeli Medical Association (IMA). In its letter to the Chief of Staff of the Israel Defense Forces, the IMA reiterated the fundamental principle that all health institutions and medical personnel engaged solely in medical purposes are entitled to protection during armed conflict.

WMA President Dr. Ashok Philip stated: “Physicians, nurses, and all health workers dedicate their lives to saving others. Journalists play an essential role in documenting the truth in conflict zones. We urge the Israeli government to uphold its obligations under international humanitarian law, including safeguarding the functioning of medical services in conflict zones.”
