World Medical Association 150th Council Meeting Montevideo, Uruguay


The World Medical Association, which represents 77 national medical associations and more than eight million doctors, is holding its 150th Council meeting in Montevideo, Uruguay, from April 16 to 19.
The meeting, to be held at the Victoria Plaza Hotel, will be attended by physicians from all over the world.

Among the major issues to be debated are:

  • a proposal by the American Medical Association to revise the Declaration of Helsinki on human experimentation;
  • proposed Statements from the French, American and Finnish medical associations setting out new ethical guidance for doctors on the use of telemedicine;
  • a joint Satement with the International Pharmaceutical Federation on the public promotion and marketing of pharmaceutical preparations;
  • debates on cloning, human rights, the international traffic in organs and the rights of the unborn.

Although the meeting will not be open to the press, background papers on the debates are available on request and interviews can be arranged before the meeting, and with representatives, during the meeting.
