WMA Annual General Assembly


16-19 October – Vila Galé Cumbuco, Fortaleza, Brazil

The annual General Assembly of the World Medical Association will be held at Vila Galé Cumbuco, Fortaleza, Brazil from 16 to 19 October 2013.

The programme of the meeting will be:

Wednesday 16 October: Committees
Thursday 17 October: Scientific Session
Friday 18 October am: Council meeting
Assembly Ceremonial Session
Saturday 19 October: General Assembly

The theme of the Scientific Session is “Life Styles and Non-Communicable Chronic Disease”. Among the keynote speakers will be Sir Michael Marmot from the British Medical Association, who will speak on the social determinants of health, Dr. Howard Bauchner, Editor of the Journal of the American Medical Association, who will
talk about diet and US health, Dr. Heikki Pälve, from the Finish Medical Association, who will talk about the Finnish tobacco policy, and Dr. Sérgio de Paula Ramos from the Brazilian Association of Studies on Alcohol and Other Drugs, who will talk on Alcohol Abuse by Adolescents.

At the Ceremonial Session, Dr. Margaret Mungherera, President of the Uganda Medical Association and a psychiatrist, will be installed as President of the WMA for 2013/14.

Among the issues on the agenda at the meeting are:
– Declaration of Helsinki: revisions relating to the ethics of medical
research on human subjects
– The Criminalisation of medical practice
– Standardisation in Medical Practice and Patient Safety
– Death penalty: United Nations moratorium
