Urgent – Dr. Ahmadreza Djalali
Your Excellency,
I am writing to you on behalf of the World Medical Association (WMA), the global federation of National
Medical Associations representing millions of physicians worldwide. Acting on behalf of patients and
physicians, the WMA endeavours to achieve the highest possible standards of medical care, ethics, education
and health-related human rights for all people. The WMA plays a key role in promoting good practice, medical
ethics and medical accountability internationally.
We have been made aware of the critical health conditions of Dr. Ahmadreza Djalali, a specialist in
emergency medicine, in detention since April 2016 on charges of espionage. From the time of his arrest, he
has been denied his fundamental human rights, undergoing undergone solitary confinement and
psychological torture. We wrote to you in February 2017 and last August to draw your attention on his case
and we are deeply concerned to note that the situation remains unchanged.
Our various sources of information confirm that Dr. Djalali is anything other than an academic peacefully
pursuing his profession. We believe that he is a prisoner of conscience and call on the Iranian authorities to
release him immediately and unconditionally.
We appeal to your humanity and sense of justice and trust that you will take promptly all the necessary steps
related to our demands.
