The World Medical Association invites you to attend the WMA Declaration of Helsinki Region: Final Expert Meeting, which will take place on 15-16 August 2024 in Washington, D.C., USA, at the Westin DC City Center, 1400 M Street, NW.

Developed in 1964 by the World Medical Association’s General Assembly, the Declaration of Helsinki (DoH) is a set of ethical principles on human experimentation developed for the medical profession. In 2022, the WMA appointed a workgroup to begin the process of revising this seminal document. To encourage as much global participation in the revision process as possible, the WMA is collaborating with its members to host a series of regional/expert meetings as below:

Following a two-year revision process led by workgroup members and observers from more than 20 countries and enriched by five regional conferences, a dedicated conference on research in resource-poor settings, a global public consultation, and comments from WMA members, the DoH workgroup will present the revised draft to some of the leading minds in medical ethics for a final reality check.

Co-organized by the American Medical Association (AMA) and the WMA, this high-level discussion will provide a final opportunity to analyze the revised draft of the DoH for thoroughness and consistency before the document is submitted to the WMA Council and, if approved, to the General Assembly for adoption. Please note that this event will be held in English, and it is open to all WMA members and invited guests. The meeting will be held in person. A virtual option is not planned.

The AMA has arranged a group rate for hotel rooms at the Westin at $189 for single/double occupancy and $359 for suites. If you are planning to attend this meeting, please book your room after the registration. The link will be available on your registration confirmation page.

The deadline for hotel reservations is July 17, 2024.  If necessary, individual rooms may be cancelled up to 72 hours prior to arrival date at no charge.

Early in the revision process, the ICoME workgroup determined that the subject of conscientious objection should be addressed in the revised draft. Realizing that this is a topic that would require an especially nuanced and in-depth debate, the workgroup requested in October 2020 that the WMA host a dedicated conference on physician conscientious objection be held once in-person meetings were feasible. In the summer of 2021, a public consultation generated a vast amount of feedback on this subject from global medical ethics experts, thus validating the need for this important meeting.

Co-organized by Indonesian Medical Association and the WMA, the International Code of Medical Ethics Dedicated Conference on Physician Conscientious Objection will provide an arena for a focused discussion on the wording of the paragraph on conscientious objection in the current revised draft of the ICoMEPlease note that this event will be held in English, and it is open to all WMA members and invited guests. One of the greatest achievements of modern medicine, vaccines have been proven to save millions of lives and protect millions more from getting sick each year. And never in our lifetimes has the development of safe, effective vaccines taken center stage in the global arena as prominently as it has during the devastating COVID-19 pandemic.

The current pandemic has amplified some of the challenges already associated with vaccination – from the hurdles that impede equitable global distribution of vaccine doses to unfounded vaccine skepticism and mistrust.

To address these issues and send a clear message to the world about the necessity and life-saving potential of vaccines, the World Medical Association (WMA), the German Medical Association (GMA), and the Pontifical Academy for Life (PAL) are teaming up to host the International Roundtable on Vaccination.

The symposium will be held as an exclusive webinar featuring a small group of leading experts in the field of immunization, preceded by a virtual live press conference facilitated by the press center of the Holy See.

The webinar will be headlined by:

Dr Soumya Swaminathan, Chief Scientist, World Health Organization (confirmed)
Dr Andrea Ammon, Director, European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (confirmed)
Prof. Stefano Semplici, Tor Vergata University of Rome (confirmed)

And will feature brief introductions from senior representatives of the co-organizers.

Registration will be open to members of the World Medical Association, the Pontifical Academy for Life and the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, along with other selected experts and stakeholders in the field. The press conference will be open to reporters and journalists credentialed by the Vatican Press Office.
