Condemnation of Attacks on Hospitals in Southern Lebanon

The WMA strongly condemns the recent attacks on hospitals in southern Lebanon, which constitute a violation of international humanitarian law and the protection of medical facilities.

According to the Lebanese Ministry of Health, an attack on a hospital in Tyre on 1 June left at least four people dead and 127 injured, including 39 members of hospital staff. The previous day, nearby Hiram hospital was also struck, injuring 13 healthcare workers.

“Hospitals must never be targeted during armed conflicts. These attacks contravene UN Security Council Resolution 2286, which demands the protection of healthcare. They are part of a deeply concerning global pattern of escalating violence against health personnel and facilities,” said WMA President Dr. Jacqueline Kitulu.

The WMA urges all parties involved in conflict to comply with their obligations under international humanitarian law and to ensure the protection of medical facilities, personnel, and patients at all times.
