WMA Condemns Violence Against Medical Personnel in Syria

The World Medical Association has sent an official letter to His Excellency Mr. Ahmed al Sharaa, Interim President and Permanent Representative of the Syrian Arab Republic to the United Nations Office at Geneva, expressing deep concern regarding reports of attacks on civilians and on healthcare services in the Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh neighborhoods of Aleppo.

In the letter the WMA draws attention that hospitals, clinics, ambulances, and medical personnel have been deliberately targeted or obstructed from fulfilling their duties. The WMA stresses that attacks against civilians, healthcare workers, and medical facilities constitute grave violations of international humanitarian law.

The letter reiterates that civilians, medical personnel, health facilities, and humanitarian operations must be always granted special protection and reminds the Syrian authorities of their obligations under international humanitarian law to safeguard these groups without discrimination.

WMA President Dr Jacqueline Kitulu stated: “The WMA unequivocally condemns all acts of violence directed against physicians and other health professionals. They must be able to carry out their duties in safety and without obstruction.”

The WMA urges the Syrian authorities to ensure full protection of civilians and healthcare workers throughout the country, to facilitate independent investigations into alleged violations, and to ensure accountability for perpetrators.
