WMA calls on Israel to ensure fair trial standards for detained Gaza physician
In a letter sent to Israel’s Prime Minister, Mr. Benjamin Netanyahu, the World Medical Association urged the authorities to guarantee due process and fair-trial rights for Dr Hussam Abu Safiya, Director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in Gaza, who has reportedly been held since 27 December 2024 without charge, as well as for other detained health professionals.
In its letter, the WMA stresses that fair-trial guarantees are a fundamental human right and calls for legal proceedings to be conducted promptly, impartially and in accordance with the rule of law.
In the absence of charges and due process, the WMA urges the immediate and unconditional release of Dr Abu Safiya and any other health workers detained under similar circumstances. The Association also calls for dignified treatment of all detainees and continuous access to health care, food and adequate sanitary conditions while in custody.
“Physicians must be able to carry out their medical duties without fear of intimidation, arbitrary detention or violence. We urge the Israeli authorities to uphold their human rights obligations, ensure fair trial standards for all detained health professionals or in the absence of such proceedings, they should be released immediately and unconditionally.” said WMA President, Dr Jacqueline Kitulu.
The WMA reiterates the necessity of respecting international humanitarian law, including the Geneva Conventions, and safeguarding patients, health workers and medical infrastructure, as well as the safe passage of food and medical aid in Gaza.
