The World Medical Journal
2004 WMJ 50 years
Welcome to the electronic version of the WMJ !
2004 marks the fiftieth anniversary of the appearance of the
World Medical Journal. It is therefore appropriate that with the
appearance of Volume 50, the World Medical Journal should be made
available on the Web. This also coincides with the arrival of
a new Honorary Editor-in-Chief, and the move to a slightly enlarged
quarterly publication. The arrangement of the contents has also
been modified to enhance its reflection of the aims and activities
of the WMA.
It is not the function of the WMJ to publish new scientific medical
research. This is clearly the function of the multitude of information
available in either the broad-based or specialised journals. However,
there is a place for publishing overviews of trends, new areas
of medical progress which may not appear in the general run of
medical journals and which can increase physicians' awareness
of developments of which they may be unaware. The changed layout,
which is notable by the prominence of a "Medical Ethics and
Human Rights" section, is complemented by a section entitled
Medical Science, Professional Practice and Education.
The Secretary General's column has been reintroduced and in a
section entitled Regional and National Medial Association (NMA)
News, we will try to report on regional developments, and NMA
initiatives or problems. All WMA news and important international
developments, notably from WHO, will, of course, continue to appear.
It is hoped that readers will find the new arrangements interesting,
informative and helpful. As ever, the Editor will be pleased to
consider any papers or information for publication.
