Dr Ashok Philip
Dr Ashok Philip is a physician specialising in Internal Medicine. He has been practising in
the private sectorin the historictown of Melaka, Malaysia foralmost 30 years afterhaving
served in the government sector for almost 10 years before that. Besides his clinical
duties in the hospital he has also served as the Chairman of the hospital’s Medical
Advisory Council.
He has carried out undergraduate medical teaching for Manipal University College in
Melaka .
He has been active in the Malaysian Medical Association, initially chairing the Melaka
Branch Committee before taking on the role of President of the Association, starting as
President-Elect in 2014, moving on to President in 2015 and then Past President in 2016.
Following this, he remained active in the Association, editing its newsletter from 2021 to
2023. He also served in numerous committees of the MMA, including the Insurance
Committee and the Foreign Relations Committee and Constitutional Review Committee
(the last two as Chairman). He is also a member of the Malaysian Bar
Council’s Disciplinary Board and served in the Malaysian Medical Council’s Ethics
Committee from 2015-2019.
In his capacity as MMA President, he started attending WMA meetings in 2016. He was
then asked to participate in a working group on governance reform. Following this, he
chaired the WMA’s committee on advocacy and communications. His work on this
committee ultimately led to the introduction of additional committee seats on the WMA
Council for smaller delegations, and he served as the MMA’s Additional Standing
Committee Member from 2022 to 2023. In 2023 he was elected unopposed to the post of
President-elect of the WMA, and took up the post of President in Helsinki in October
2024.
