Item 13 – Antimicrobial resistance: accelerating national and global responses
Honourable Chair, Distinguished Delegates,
We would like to stress key aspects that should be urgently addressed as we are gearing towards the
high-level meeting:
▪ Firstly, ensuring funding of National Action Plans is imperative. For that, a combination of
national and global funding is necessary.
▪ Health systems strengthening must focus on adequate working conditions for health
professionals and on their education in the management and appropriate use of antimicrobial
agents, including in surveillance and prevention, as well as antimicrobial prescribing rights only
for health professionals with the necessary scope of practice.
▪ More evidence should be sought on interventions to overcome inequities within countries in
relation to socio-economic status, gender, and education among others.
▪ Access should not be limited to antibiotics but also extend to quality-assured diagnostics,
therapeutics and vaccines, which should be included as sub-indicators.
