World Medical Association Urges Action On Landmines

Commenting on the deaths of three soldiers from a landmine in Bosnia, Dr Ian Field, Secretary General of the World Medical Association said:

“The latest tragic deaths of soldiers in Bosnia as a result of landmines demonstrates yet again the urgency for action in dealing with this unpredictable weapon. Doctors around the world support immediate restrictions on the use in armed conflict of anti-personnel landmines which kill and maim soldiers and civilians. The World Medical Association, whose members come from 64 countries, calls upon the United Nations and individual governments to bring an end to the indiscriminate effects of landmines.”

“Death and injury to soldiers as well as to civilians now represents one of the biggest public health issues facing the world today and it is time that concerted worldwide action was taken. Whatever happens, doctors will have to cope with the casualties for decades to come.”
