Introduction
The 2021/2022 JDN Management team took office in October 2021 and we are now halfway through
the team’s term. This year the team already had significantly more experience with functioning
virtually and organising activities; engaging members was thus easier this term. Yet the team is
looking to the future and trying to prepare for the return to in-person activities and planning how to
ensure meaningful hybrid participation opportunities with its members after that transition. Once
more, the JDN Management Team created a joint JDN Management Team Strategy to present
priorities to its members.
1. Membership
The JDN continues to regularly welcome new members. The JDN membership meetings continue on
a regular basis with rotating times to facilitate the participation of members from all regions of the
world.
The JDN has held fully virtual bi-annual meetings since October 2020, which has allowed a greater
number of JDN members to participate than usual. We are looking forward to the first hybrid meeting
ahead of the WMA Council Meeting in April 2022 and we will work to ensure that virtual
participation is also meaningful.
A new virtual Newcomer session was created and has been delivered in January once more and was
greatly appreciated by the participants. This session will be recorded and made available online for
members in the future. The JDN will continue to host Q&A sessions for new members a few times
per year.
2. Participation in WMA internal and external activities
Our network has provided comments on MEC & SMAC policies. We are also delighted to be serving
as the rapporteurs for the revision of the WMA Statement on the Professional and Ethical use of
Social Media.
The JDN took part in the WMA work related to the 150th
WHO Executive Board Meeting; is assisting
in some follow-ups at WHO meetings related to negotiations on the pandemic treaty, and activities
ahead of the WHA75.

The JDN has contributed to the work of the WFME Executive Council and has conducted
consultations on the post-graduate medical education standards.
Multiple JDN Management Team members had previously contributed to the work of the Associate
Members’ Steering Committee and are looking forward to continuing contributions to the WMA
Associate Membership after the current difficult transition.
3. Internal organization of the management team
The JDN Management Team has once more adopted a joint JDN Management Team Strategy that
lists priorities for the term and presented that document to the JDN membership.
The JDN Management Team has improved the prioritisation of issues in order to ensure the timely
discussion of pressing issues at its monthly meetings.
A mid-term management team meeting will be organised in person at the bi-annual JDN Netting
ahead of the WMA Council Meeting.
4. Working groups
The JDN has six active working groups (WG):
• Comprehensive Primary Health Coverage WG
• Medical Exchange, Education and International Mobility WG
• Medical Ethics WG
• Antimicrobial Resistance WG
• WHO related activities WG, and
• COVID/Pandemic WG.
Furthermore, the JDN has working groups which conduct ad-hoc work on specific topics: the Global
Surgery WG, and the Climate Change WG.
5. Publications
The 2020-2021 JDN Publication team produced handover material and compiled the publication tools
at the beginning of the 2021-2022 term to facilitate handover to the new team.
Given personal challenges of the Publication Director, the 2021-2022 work on publication has not
yet started. The JDN Management Team alongside with the JDN Publication Director for the term
2020-2021 are working to support alternative management structures for the publication team with
the goal of producing at least one newsletter edition in this term.
Previous editions of the JDN Newsletter can be found here: https://www.wma.net/junior-
doctors/news/.
6. Communications

The JDN has posted regularly about WMA and JDN activities on its social media platforms and relays
WMA social media messages. This has allowed JDN members to continue to amplify the WMA
social media presence.
7. Collaboration with other health professionals’ groups
The JDN works on maintaining strong links with other health professionals’ associations, including
the International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations (IFMSA), the Student Network of the
International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW), the European Junior Doctors
Association (EJD), and the WHO Global Health Workforce Network (GHWN) Youth hub. The JDN
is currently working with other youth organizations and the World Health Organization (WHO) for
the establishment of a WHO Youth Council to advise the Director General.
The JDN has established contact with the Trainee Association of the European Society of Clinical
Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID) and will explore possible areas of collaboration.
