Dear colleagues,
The next General Assembly of the WMA will be held in Reykjavik, Iceland on
3-6th of October 2018. In conjunction with the Assembly, a two and a half day conference on
Medical Ethics will be organized on 2-4th of October.
The last day of the conference will be included in the registration fee for the Assembly and is
intended for the delegates but is open as well to all those that register for the conference.
Participants for the whole conference that are registered in the name of their National
Member Association (NMA) will pay a reduced fee. This is primarily intended for all those that
are active in ethical issues on behalf of their respective association but is of course open to all
that are registered on behalf of their NMA.
A scientific committee of the WMA has evaluated the ideas on the themes of the conference.
The committee made many valuable comments and the list of proposed themes is the result of
this consultation.

The current proposed main themes are as follows.
• Ethics of conduct; Declaration of Geneva and the International Code of Medical Ethics.
• Ethics of research; Conflict of interest, use of placebo etc.
• Ethical use of health data and patients access to own health data
• Health care of non documented immigrants
• Ethics of palliative care
• Euthanasia and Physician Assisted suicide
• Ethics of use of genetic information
• The ethics of prenatal testing
• Hard choices; the use of very expensive medication
Our wish is to see many participants registered on behalf of their NMA´s. We also urge all
constituent members that have interest to participate with presentations on the major themes
to contact the organizers. Free oral sessions will also be organized as well as poster sessions
and for them, any topic of medical ethics can be presented.
