Patient safety is<br \/>\none of the core elements of quality care.<br \/>\nIn order to enhance patient safety special attention is required in health systems strengthening and<br \/>\nhere especially in primary health care. Since health care is delivered in a team approach, effective<br \/>\nleadership, good communication and the availability of a competent and compassionate workforce<br \/>\nis vital. Communication and cooperation with all relevant stakeholders and especially patients are<br \/>\nimperative to improve patient safety.<br \/>\nIndividuals and processes are rarely solely responsible for producing errors. They rather happen<br \/>\nthrough combined elements. Therefore, there should be a non-punitive culture for confidential<br \/>\nreporting of healthcare errors that focuses on preventing and correcting systems failures rather than<br \/>\non individual or organization accountability.<br \/>\nTo favour such an approach, physicians must continuously absorb a wide range of advanced<br \/>\nscientific knowledge. Special attention needs to be given therefore to education, training and<br \/>\ncontinues development.<br \/>\nAll these aspects are a priority for WMA and are reflected in the WMA Declaration on Patient<br \/>\nSafety. WMA therefor supports WHO in setting similar priorities in its report and recent activities.<br \/>\nWMA through its member associations will promote policies on patient safety and encourage<br \/>\nindividual physicians, other health care professionals, patients and other relevant individuals,<br \/>\norganizations and governments to work together to establish systems that secure patient safety.<br \/>\nWe look forward continuing our collaboration with WHO on these issues.<br \/>\nThank you<br \/>\nWMA page 2<\/p>\n"},"caption":{"rendered":"<p>EB 144 &#8211; 6.6 Global action on patient safety &#8211; WMA_final THE WORLD MEDICAL ASSOCIATION, INC.
