The capital of Sudan is Khartoum.<br \/>\nPopulation<br \/>\nThe current population of Sudan is 41 452 272, based on the latest United Nations estimates. Sudan&rsquo;s<br \/>\npopulation is equivalent to 0.54% of the world\u2019s total population.<br \/>\nNeighbouring countries<br \/>\nSudan is bordered by Egypt to the north, the Red Sea, Eritrea and Ethiopia to the east, South Sudan to the<br \/>\nsouth, the Central African Republic to the southwest, Chad to the west and Libya to the northwest.<br \/>\nIt is the third largest country in Africa covering 1 886 068 square kilometres (728 215 square miles). The White<br \/>\nNile flows through the country, emptying into Lake Nubia in the north, the largest manmade lake in the world.<br \/>\nThe River Nile divides the country into eastern and western halves.<br \/>\nLandscape<br \/>\nSudan has a 853 km coastline bordering the Red Sea. The terrain is generally flat plains, broken by several<br \/>\nmountain ranges. In the west, the Deriba Caldera located in the Marrah Mountains, is the highest point in<br \/>\nSudan at 3042 metres or 9980 feet. In the east are the Red Sea Hills. The Blue and White Nile rivers meet in<br \/>\nKhartoum to form the River Nile, which flows northwards through Egypt to the Mediterranean Sea. The Blue<br \/>\nNile&rsquo;s course through Sudan is nearly 800 km long and is joined by the Dinder and Rahad Rivers between<br \/>\nSennar and Khartoum. The White Nile within Sudan has no significant tributaries. There are several dams on<br \/>\nthe Blue and White Niles. Among them are the Sennar and Roseires Dams on the Blue Nile, and the Jebel<br \/>\nAulia Dam on the White Nile.<br \/>\nEconomy<br \/>\nSudan is an agricultural country. Its major exports include agricultural products like cotton, peanuts, Arabic<br \/>\ngum and sesame seeds.<br \/>\nLanguage<br \/>\nArabic and English are the official working languages of the country. Other languages spoken in Sudan belong<br \/>\nto three families of African languages: Afro-Asiatic, Nilo-Saharan, and Niger-Congo.<br \/>\nCulture<br \/>\nSudan is culturally diverse and has diverse linguistic, ethnic, social, cultural, and religious characteristics.<br \/>\nLocation<br \/>\nKhartoum is the capital and largest city of Sudan. It is located at the confluence of the White Nile, flowing<br \/>\nnorth from Lake Victoria, and the Blue Nile, flowing west from Ethiopia. The location where the two rivers<br \/>\nmeet is known as \u00ab\u00a0al-Moqran\u00a0\u00bb (\u202b\u0627\u0644\u0645\u0642\u0631\u0646\u202c the confluence). The River Nile continues to flow north towards Egypt<br \/>\nand the Mediterranean Sea. Divided by the two Nile rivers, Khartoum is a tripartite metropolis consisting of<br \/>\nKhartoum proper, and linked by bridges to Khartoum North al-Khar\u1e6d\u016bm Ba\u1e25r\u012b and Omdurman to the west.<br \/>\n3<br \/>\nThings to do: sightseeing and shopping<br \/>\nThe venue of the Sixty-fifth session of the WHO Regional Committee is Al Salam Rotana Hotel. The<br \/>\nrepresentatives may be accompanied by alternates and advisers<br \/>\n(Rule 1 of the Rules of Procedure).<br \/>\nThe Regional Director, in consultation with the Regional<br \/>\nCommittee, may invite States, not Members of the Committee, to<br \/>\nparticipate without vote in the sessions of the Committee. The<br \/>\nRegional Director, in consultation with the Regional Committee,<br \/>\nmay also invite nongovernmental organizations to participate in<br \/>\nthe deliberations of the Committee (Rule 2 of the Rules of<br \/>\nProcedure).<br \/>\nMember States shall communicate to the Regional Director, not<br \/>\nless than 15 days before the date fixed for the opening of the<br \/>\nsession of the Committee, the name of their representatives,<br \/>\nincluding all alternates and advisers. Similarly organizations and<br \/>\nStates invited to be represented at the session shall communicate<br \/>\nthe names of the persons by whom they will be represented. The<br \/>\ncredentials of representatives and names of alternates, advisers<br \/>\nand observers should be submitted to the Regional Director if<br \/>\npossible not less than two days before the opening of the session<br \/>\nof the Regional Committee. Such credentials will be issued by the<br \/>\nHead of State, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Minister of<br \/>\nHealth or any other appropriate authority (Rule 3 of the Rules of<br \/>\nProcedure).<br \/>\nThe working languages of the Committee are Arabic, English and<br \/>\nFrench. Statements made in any of these languages will be<br \/>\ninterpreted simultaneously into the other two languages.<br \/>\nOfficial documentation of the session will be available in Arabic,<br \/>\nEnglish and French on the Regional Committee website<br \/>\n[http:\/\/www.emro.who.int\/about-who\/rc65\/index.html] from early<br \/>\nSeptember 2018. Documents will not be dispatched by post.<br \/>\nFurthermore, participants are kindly requested to bring all<br \/>\ndocuments to the session, as only a limited number of hard copies<br \/>\nwill be available.<br \/>\nIt would be appreciated if delegations wishing to propose draft<br \/>\nresolutions to be distributed to the Regional Committee could<br \/>\nhand them in to the Secretariat at least 2 days before the proposal<br \/>\nis discussed, to allow time for translation, reproduction in the<br \/>\nworking languages and circulation to delegations.<br \/>\nDelegates\/participants should make their own travel arrangements<br \/>\nfor both outward and return journeys. Travellers are strongly<br \/>\nadvised to have their return flights confirmed before departing for<br \/>\nSudan, as onward reservations and deviations may be difficult to<br \/>\nobtain at short notice. The Secretariat will provide assistance with<br \/>\ntravel arrangements during the session, if needed.<br \/>\n6<br \/>\nArrival in Khartoum<br \/>\nEntry visa to Khartoum<br \/>\nPrivileges and<br \/>\nimmunities<br \/>\nInsurance<br \/>\nAccommodation<br \/>\nUpon arrival at Khartoum International Airport, transport to the<br \/>\nhotel will be made available provided that participants have<br \/>\nsupplied their travel details on their registration form.<br \/>\nThe journey time by car from the airport to the hotel is around 10<br \/>\nminutes.<br \/>\nRepresentatives and other participants should obtain a visa for<br \/>\nSudan prior to departure from their home countries.<br \/>\nAll Members officially attending the Regional Committee in<br \/>\nKhartoum, Sudan, as well as their alternates and advisers, will<br \/>\nenjoy the privileges and immunities granted to representatives at<br \/>\nmeetings convened by United Nations specialized agencies, which<br \/>\nare set out in the Convention on the Privileges and Immunities of<br \/>\nthe Specialized Agencies.<br \/>\nThe Secretariat cannot accept liability for personal accidents or<br \/>\nloss of or damage to the private property of participants and<br \/>\naccompanying persons, either during or indirectly arising from<br \/>\nattendance at the Sixty-fifth session of the Regional Committee<br \/>\nfor the Eastern Mediterranean.
