\nrdis Dee Hoven, MD, an internal medicine and infectious disease specialist in Lexington,
\nKy., was president of the American Medical Association from June 2013 to June 2014.
\nDr. Hoven has been a member of the AMA Board of Trustees (BOT) since 2005, serving as
\nits secretary for 2008\u20132009, chair for 2010\u20132011, and immediate past chair from 2011 to 2012.
\nPrior to her election to the AMA-BOT, Dr. Hoven
\nserved as a member and chair of the AMA Council
\non Medical Service. She was a member of the
\nUtilization Review and Accreditation Commission
\nfor six years and served on its executive
\ncommittee. Additional activities have included
\nservice on the AMA Foundation board of directors,
\nthe Group Practice Advisory Council of the AMA,
\nthe AMA-convened Physician Consortium for
\nPerformance Improvement\u00ae, the COLA board
\nof directors, the National Advisory Council for
\nHealthcare Research and Quality, as well as an
\nappointment to the Practicing Physicians Advisory
\nCommission. Currently Dr. Hoven serves as the
\nAMA-BOT representative on the Board of Directors
\nof the National Quality Forum, the Quality Alliance
\nSteering Committee, and is the chair of the AMA
\ndelegation to the World Medical Association.
\nDr. Hoven\u2019s involvement at the state level has
\nbeen extensive. She was president of the Kentucky
\nMedical Association from 1993 to 1994 and served
\nas a delegate to the AMA from Kentucky prior to
\nher election to the AMA-BOT. She has also been
\nactively involved in medical staff issues at her
\nlocal hospital and has held a variety of positions,
\nincluding president of the medical staff, member
\nof the board of directors and president of the
\nhospital foundation board.
\nBorn in Cincinnati, Dr. Hoven received her
\nundergraduate degree in microbiology and
\nthen her medical degree from the University of
\nKentucky, Lexington. She completed her internal
\nmedicine and infectious disease training at the
\nUniversity of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.
\nBoard-certified in internal medicine and infectious
\ndisease, Dr. Hoven is a fellow of the American
\nCollege of Physicians and the Infectious Disease
\nSociety of America. She has been the recipient of
\nmany awards, including the University of Kentucky
\nCollege of Medicine Distinguished Alumnus
\nAward and the Kentucky Medical Association
\nDistinguished Service Award. In 2013 Dr. Hoven
\nwas named one of Modern Healthcare Magazine\u2019s
\nTop 25 Women in Healthcare, in addition to its list
\nof the 100 Most Influential People in Healthcare
\n(No. 54), and its 50 Most Influential Physician
\nExecutives and Leaders (No. 5).
\nDr. Hoven is married to Ron Sanders, PhD, an
\neconomist and college professor. They share a
\nmutual enjoyment of two grandchildren, sports,
\ntravel and philanthropic activities.
