Medical research is subject to ethical standards that promote<br \/>\nrespect for all human subjects and protect their health and<br \/>\nrights. Some research populations are particularly vulnerable and<br \/>\nneed special protection. These include those who cannot give or<br \/>\nrefuse consent for themselves and those who may be vulnerable<br \/>\nto coercion or undue influence.\u201d (DoH 2008)<br \/>\nVulnerability in the Declaration of Helsinki<br \/>\nListing of specific vulnerable groups:<br \/>\n\u201c9. [\u2026] those who cannot give or refuse consent for themselves<br \/>\nand those who may be vulnerable to coercion or undue influence.\u201d<br \/>\n(DoH 2008)<br \/>\nVulnerability in the Declaration of Helsinki<br \/>\nSpecial protection:<br \/>\n\u201c17. Medical research involving a disadvantaged or vulnerable<br \/>\npopulation or community is only justified if the research is<br \/>\nresponsive to the health needs and priorities of this population<br \/>\nor community and if there is a reasonable likelihood that this<br \/>\npopulation or community stands to benefit from the results of<br \/>\nthe research.\u201d (DoH 2008)<br \/>\nSuggestions for the current revision process of the DoH<br \/>\n9. Medical research is subject to ethical standards that<br \/>\npromote respect for all human subjects and protect their<br \/>\nhealth and rights. Some research subjects are vulnerable<br \/>\nand have an increased likelihood of incurring additional<br \/>\nand greater wrong. They need special protection.<br \/>\nSuggestions for the current revision process of the DoH<br \/>\n17.
