FORTALEZA IN BRIEF AND PRACTICAL INFORMATION

The capital of the state capital of Ceará, Fortaleza is located in the Northeastern part of Brazil and occupies a total area of 313 sq.km and has the highest demographic density in the country (8.001 per sq.km). To the north of the city lies the Atlantic Ocean; to the south are the municipalities of Pacatuba, Eusébio, Maracanaú and Itaitinga; to the east is the municipality of Aquiraz and the Atlantic Ocean; and to the west is the municipality of Caucaia, where the Hotel Vila Galé Cumbuco is located.

Fortaleza was established in 1603, when the Portuguese constructed the Fort of São Tiago and founded the settlement of Nova Lisboa (New Lisbon), gaining its actual name in 1726. In the 20TH Century, Fortaleza was under significant urban changes that improved the quality of life. That promoted a rural exodus to the city, mainly in the end of the decade of 1910, making it the seventh most populated city in Brazil. Fortaleza is also known for its crop of comedians and the forró music and dance, all gaining popularity countrywide. The Fortaleza Airport is served by all Brazilian airlines and also by TAP (from Lisbon).

Climate

October in Fortaleza is very dry; with very little rainfall and the temperatures is about 28°C.

Currency

The national currency is the Brazilian Real. Travellers' cheques and all major credit cards are widely accepted. Currency may be exchanged in hotels, banks, airport or currency exchanges.

Passport and Visas

Visas are granted by the Brazilian consulates abroad. No visa is required for stays of up to 90 days from holders of passports from some countries. A list of countries requiring Visas to travel to Brazil can be found at: http://www.portalconsular.mre.gov.br/estrangeiros/quadro-de-regime-de-vistos-simplificado-ingles.pdf. Please check early for the necessary of a visa and do apply soon, if necessary. Non-compliance with visa regulations will either prevent you from travelling to Brazil or may most likely result in detention and extradition.

If it is necessary to get an invitation letter issued by the WMA, please contact the WMA Secretariat at wma@wma.net.

Tipping

The restaurants usually add a 10% service charge to the bill automatically. It is usual to give a little more if the service is good. If the tip is not included on the bill, it is normal to give a tip of 10-15%.

Emergency

In case of an emergency during the meetings, contact the AMB secretariat in the hotel. Participants are advised to purchase medical insurance prior to their trip.
