| Letter to the World Medical Association
Thank you for sending me the last press release from the WMA.
I am very pleased to be in Jakarta to support the KMA medical
team (Korean Emergency Medical Assistance Team; KEMAT) which has
just arrived at the Ban Aceh airport tonight.
I would like to provide you with some information I got here and
hopefully it could be useful for everybody. Since the KEMAT has
just arrived at the Aceh airport, I hope I can give you more information
about the health situation here later.
The Korean Medical Association sent the above mentioned medical
team, composed of 8 doctors, 4 nurses, 7 medical students, 1 administration
staff, and 1 reporter, 24 in total, to Jakarta on January 5 and
tonight, the KEMAT landed at the Aceh airport via Mandela airline
with 21 Indonesian doctors and volunteers.
The KEMAT , being led by Dr. Kwon, Yong Jin, the Director of Community
Participants of KMA, is now moving to the basecamp prepared by
the Indonesian Medical Association and is planning to play a role
as a secondary hospital. This basecamp was a student dormitory
and is now a the headquarter for administration affairs. According
to the Indonesian Medical Asssociation ( InMA) the capacity of
this basecamp is for 150 people. It is located at about 25km from
the Aceh airport and relatively far from the basecamp. There are
6 shelters which are being used as clinics. We have been informed
that in a few days Indonesian doctors will be dispatched to one
of those clinics.
The KEMAT brought 6 carton boxes, 6.8 tons of drugs and materials,
including 8 tents, 30 beds, fluid, water, instant food, as well
as essential drugs and antibiotics. But the most serious problem
here is that so far only one box has been delivered to the Aceh
airport and only one or two more boxes will be delivered tomorrow
morning to Aceh. The reason why we could not send the luggage
and the people earlier, was because there were too many relief
cargos here in Jakarta. Some necessary payments had to be made
beforehand. The cargo space is also limited.
The KEMAT has already asked for fund raising through the international
media and provided information for donation through the Indonesian
Medical Association's bank account. Please see the information
below:
P.B. Ikatan Dokter Indonesia
BNI Cabang Menteng
No. Account : 13458490
Now I am desperately trying to send the KEMAT's luggage boxes
which still in Chengkareng airport in Jakarta. They must be sent
to the Aceh airport.
For more information, you can contact me at my international roaming
phone (+82-11-792-6908) or at my Indonesian phone (+62-81-316-703151).
The 1st team of KEMAT is planning to stay in Aceh until January12
and the KMA is now preparing the 2nd team, in order to continue
the medical assistance. I think I should be here in Jakarta as
a main post until the return of the first team.
Thank you for your attention and I will keep you informed.
Best regards,
Mrs. Yoonsun Park- Project Coordinator
Korean Medical Association
