MEMBERSHIP NEWS
Canadian-based Consumer Advocare Network joins IAPO
Consumer Advocare Network brings together Canadian patients' organizations for the purpose of promoting patient participation in healthcare policy. One stimulus for the organization was the lack of patient involvement on key healthcare policy initiatives, as demonstrated by the tainted blood scandals of the 1980's, whereby thousands of patients were infected with HIV and hepatitis C. Patients were not part of the decision-making nor were they informed about the risk of infection at the time. A collaboration of groups whose members relied upon the blood supply participated with the government in the reform of the blood system leading to the creation of a new independent agency in which patients had significant roles throughout, including two patient seats on the Board of Directors.
