WMA Welcome Release Of Dr Beko Ransome-Kuti
The World Medical Association has welcomed reports that Nigeria's
new military leader is releasing a number of political prisoners,
including Dr Beko Ransome-Kuti, former secretary general of the
Nigerian Medical Association.
The WMA has spent the past few years pressing for the release of
Dr Ransome-Kuti who was sentenced to life imprisonment in Nigeria
in 1995, accused of trying to overthrow the Nigerian Government.
In recent months concern has been growing about Dr Ransome-Kuti's
health and the WMA has intensified its efforts to bring about his
freedom.
Dr Anders Milton, chairman of the WMA Council, said: "I
warmly welcome Dr Ransome-Kuti's release and I thank all those
of our national medical association members who have worked so
hard to bring this about".
