Bioethics Committee entitled, "Towards a Declaration on Universal
Norms on Bioethics" in Paris, Prof. John Williams presented
the comments of the WMA
Ethics Unit on the IBC's proposed declaration.
23-24 April 2004 - Prof. John Williams is giving a presentation
on "The Ethics Activities of the World Medical Association"
at a conference on The Ethics of Intellectual Property Rights
and Patents in Warsaw, Poland.
31 March 2004 - Dr. James Appleyard, WMA President, is
co-chair of a session on "International Approaches to Research
Subjects Protections: Promoting Public Health through Responsible
Clinical Research" at a conference on European Clinical Research
Oversight Situated in a Global Context: Inspections, Ethical Review,
& Research Participants Protections, co-sponsored by the European
Agency for the Evaluation of Medicinal Products and the European
Forum for Good Clinical Practice in Brussels, Belgium.
21-25 March 2004 - Prof. John R. Williams is giving three
presentations at the 3rd International Conference on Ethics Education
in Medical Schools and the 21st International Conference on Death
and Bereavement in Eilat, Israel. The titles of the presentations
are "An International Ethics Manual for Medical Students,"
"The Current State of the Debate About Paragraph 30 of the
Declaration of Helsinki," and "Ethics and Bereavement"
(with Rosemary Williams, M.S.W.).
15 March 2004 - Dr. Delon Human gave a lecture entitled
"Access to Medicines in Research: The Billion Dollar Question"
to the Vienna School of Clinical Research in Vienna, Austria.
2-7 March 2004 - Prof. John R. Williams is giving workshops
on research ethics, teaching medical ethics, and WMA's human rights
activities at the 53rd March Meeting of the International Federation
of Medical Student Associations on Isla de Margarita, Venezuela.
11 December 2003 - Prof. John Williams gave the opening
address at a conference on Ethics in Clinical Development: From
Legislation to Implementation, in London, UK, sponsored by the
European Agency for the Evaluation of Medicinal Products and the
European Forum for Good Clinical Practice. The title of his presentation
was "The World Medical Association and the Declaration of
Helsinki: An Evolving Global Perspective on Ethical Review."
3 December 2003 - Prof. John Williams chaired a session
on "Ethics and Health Research" at the 7th Global Forum
for Health Research conference in Geneva.
24-25 November 2003 - Prof. John Williams attended a meeting
of the UN Inter-Agency Committee on Bioethics at the World Health
Organization, Geneva.
19 November 2003 - Dr. James Appleyard participated in
a panel discussion on "What is needed to achieve convergence
in regulatory approaches to research in children" at the
European Forum for Good Clinical Practice/European Agency for
the Evaluation of Medicinal Products conference on "International
Collaboration in Paediatric Medicine" in London.
7 November 2003 - Dr. James Appleyard, WMA President,
was the keynote speaker at the American Academy of Pharmaceutical
Physicians annual meeting in Miami, Florida. The title of his
presentation was "How
Should We Treat Our Children?" .
6-7 October 2003 - Prof. John Williams participated in
panel discussions at the European Forum for Good Clinical Practice
conferences on The Role of the Sponsor in European Clinical
Research and The Implementation of the Clinical Trials Directive
and the Evolving Role of European Ethics Committees in Brussels.
1 October 2003 - Dr. Alan Rowe, incoming Editor of the
World Medical Journal, and Prof. John Williams attended the WHO
Ethics Council meeting in Geneva.
18 September 2003 - Prof. John Williams participated in
a workshop on Workplace Violence - A Threat to Quality Health
Services at the International Labour Office, Geneva.
3 September 2003 - Prof. John Williams, Director of Ethics,
attended the WHO Ethics Council meeting in Geneva.
21-23 August 2003 - Dr. Kati Myllymäki, WMA President,
participated in a panel discussion at a conference on Ethics
in Biomedical Research in Helsinki.
